Yes, we did it! We finished our 10 detox. The first 5 days were rough but the last 5 were much better. I don’t think they’d admit it but everyone was feeling better. No one was hungry. The energy level was up and the numbers on the scales were down.
Yesterday, our last day, was filled with a lot of talk about what delicious foods were going to be eaten as soon as this was over. Everything from donuts to chocolate chip muffins to Big Macs to Frappes. We also talked about what changes would be made around here — hopefully permanently.
The night before the detox, we took ALL the food out of the kitchen that did not comply. That left an empty pantry and a pretty empty refrigerator. We filled the fridge with all kinds of veges and fruits. The pantry was stocked with seeds and nuts and healthy fats. During the detox they could eat anything they wanted that was in the kitchen.
Now that we’re done and they’re wanting to eat the good old favorites, we came to an “agreement”. Any junk food would be left out in the garage. If they want to eat it, they have to go out there to get it. We won’t be buying cookies, cakes, chips, etc. If they really want something like that to eat, they can make it from scratch.
We only ate out twice during the detox. Those were interesting experiences. Originally I wasn’t going to make a big deal about what the boys ate when we ate out but they were troopers. At Chick-fil-a they ordered grilled chicken and salad and water. Those were some pretty sad boys that day.
Last night we ate at Souper Salad. The boys were asking if they could get something off of the detox. I told them it was up to them. If they wanted to be able to say they had completed the 10 day detox, they should just eat salad but if they didn’t care about that, they could get what they wanted. Benjamin caved. While he did eat a pretty good salad, he also enjoyed pizza and Mac/cheese. Jonathan stuck with it except for that one piece of pasta that mysteriously showed up on top of his salad. Danny stuck with the program.
Today was our first day of freedom. There has been much too much junk food eaten but they all happily ate the healthy supper I fixed — fajitas — no tortillas but I did let them have cheese. I’ve stuck with the same plan but added iced tea and will also add a little dairy back into my diet.
So, we can consider the 10 day detox a success!
