This is my grandmother's recipe. My kids would say it is their grandmother's recipe. Well, it's mine now. Since I'm not a big bread maker (I'd eat too much of it), I don't make it often. When I do make it, I like to triple the recipe. Then, I can make rolls for dinner, cinnamon rolls for breakfast and have some rolls to freeze for a later date.
Single Recipe:
2/3 cup sugar
1 1/4 stick butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk (lukewarm)
1/4 cup hot water
2 packs yeast
7 cups flour
Triple Recipe:
2 cups sugar
3 3/4 stick butter
3 teaspoon salt
6 cups milk
3/4 cups hot water
8 tablespoons yeast
21 cups flour (1 bag plus 3 cups)
In large bowl, mix sugar, salt and butter.
In small bowl stir yeast with hot water.
Heat milk in microwave until it is nearly hot.
Add yeast mixture to sugar mixture.
Add 2 cups flour and 3 cups milk.
Mix well.
Add 2 cups flour and 3 cups milk.
Mix well.
Keep adding flour to a total of 7 cups.
Let rise until double (a couple of hours).
Knead 7 minutes.
Form into rolls.
Let rise 1 hour.
Bake 350 degrees.
Open one end of a stick of butter.
Spread on top of hot rolls just as they come out of oven.
Make ahead and freeze just before baking.
